Listed below are this month’s major outages lasting five minutes or more and affecting at least 500 members.
Coon Rapids (3/15/25)
At 12:38 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2025, Woodcrest Substation Circuit 2 recloser operated and calls began coming in indicating power was lost on one of the three phases, affecting 567 members in Coon Rapids. Our crew was dispatched to investigate and found Great River Energy's pole near 101st Ave NW & Sycamore St NW nearly burned in half. This was caused by a failed insulator on our underbuilt overhead line. At 2:22 p.m., GRE de-energized their transmission line causing an outage to the rest of Woodcrest Substation along with Northtown and Airport Substations. At 2:28 p.m., after switching help from our crews, GRE restored power to all three substations from an alternate source. GRE's pole eventually collapsed due to the damage. Our crew isolated the pole and at 4:29 p.m. began restoring the affected members. By 8:54 p.m., all affected members were restored including four homes placed on a generator until GRE replaced their pole the following day.
Ramsey (3/13/25)
At 12:39 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2025, Anoka Substation Circuit 2 recloser locked out, leaving 761 members in Ramsey without power. A vehicle involved in a police chase struck our pole along Armstrong Blvd near Kangaroo St. Our crews isolated the broken pole as much as possible. By 2:58 a.m., power was restored to 718 affected members. In order to safely replace the broken pole, 43 members had to remain off while required repairs were being made. At 6:30 a.m., repairs were complete, and all remaining affected members were restored.
Big Lake (3/11/25)
At 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2025, Thompson Lake Substation Circuit 3 recloser locked out, leaving 1,126 members in Big Lake without power. A car struck our guy wires along County Rd 81, just north of Highway 10, throwing them up into our overhead line. Our crews made the necessary repairs to the guy wires and at 10:47 p.m., all affected members were restored via SCADA.
Baldwin Township (2/25/25)
At 5:25 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Princeton Substation Circuit 4 locked out, leaving 487 members primarily in Baldwin Township and Spencer Brook Township without power. Our crew found a guy wire up in our overhead line at the intersection of County Rd 2 & County Rd 19. It appeared a car had struck the guy wire but left the scene before our crew arrived. At 8:02 a.m., our crew finished making the required repairs and power was restored via SCADA to all affected members.
