What To Do In An Outage

Power outages can occur any time of the year. Connexus Energy encourages members to plan ahead for power outages with these simple guidelines.

Before an outage

  • Install surge protectors for critical electrical devices.
  • Test emergency releases on garage door openers.
  • Keep a corded phone in your home or, if you no longer have a landline, at least one cellular phone.
  • Sign up for outage alerts via email or text by adding notifications to your online account.
  • Sign up to receive weather alerts on your smartphone.
  • Contact Connexus if you plan to utilize an auxiliary generator. Improper installation or use could damage equipment and cause serious injuries - to both you and the Connexus Energy line workers. Review generator safety guidelines.
  • Prepare an emergency kit, including
    • Several flashlights or a battery-operated lantern. Keep a flashlight accessible on every level of your home.
    • Battery-operated clock and radio.
    • Portable cell phone charger.
    • First aid kit.
    • Small fire extinguisher.
    • Drinking water and non-perishable food items.
    • Travel-sized games or cards, books, or other items to occupy the kids.
    • Emergency phone numbers, including the Connexus Energy outage line 763.323.2660.

During an outage

  • Report your outage by calling 763.323.2660
  • Stay away from downed power lines. Treat all power lines as though they are energized and extremely dangerous. Report any downed power lines to Connexus at 763.323.2660.
  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed to help preserve food. An unopened refrigerator will keep food cold for approximately four hours. Keeping ice in your freezer in advance will help keep foods frozen. Foods will stay frozen for 12 to 48 hours.
  • Basement or lower level flooding in your home may increase the risk of electric shock when the power comes back on. Never use electric appliances near water, even on a wet floor.
  • Switch off all appliances that were running when the power went out, especially electric stoves and ovens. Dishwashers, washers, and dryers may be left on; they will resume their cycles once power is restored.
  • If you do not have reliable surge protectors, unplug computers, radios, TVs, receivers, dvd players, and other entertainment equipment until power is restored.

After an outage

  • Throw away food that has been exposed at 40° f or higher for two hours or more, that has an unusual color, texture, or odor, usual color, texture, or order, or otherwise seems questionable.
  • Restock your emergency kit with bottled water, non-perishable food items, and batteries.
